In July 2016, Ben was aged 39 and living in Hong Kong, working as Chief Information Security & Trust Officer at the Commonwealth Bank Ben when he experienced a stroke. Prior to this, Ben held senior roles in a number of financial institutions worldwide, as well as working in roles in national security and foreign intelligence.

Ben’s stroke resulted in significant physical and communication impairments. Since early 2017, Ben has been working with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians (physiotherapy, speech pathology and occupational therapy) at Independent Rehabilitation Services, and has made significant progress in his recovery.

Earlier this year, Ben presented at the Australian Aphasia Association (AAA) 2021 Conference, both independently and part of a group. The theme of the conference was ‘Relationships’, and in this presentation (presented as part of a group of four people), Ben talks about his journey and how the AAA online communication groups helped him develop new relationships and maintain contact with peers, both during the COVID-19 lockdowns and beyond.
