Emma Downey

Emma is a Senior Physiotherapist and has been with IRS for 6 years. She is currently the IRS Clinical Lead for Physiotherapy and loves supporting the IRS physio team in this role.

Emma has 17 years experience working as a physiotherapist with clients in hospital, their homes’ and in the community and has been solely working in the neurological space for over a decade.

In 2017, Emma completed post-graduate studies in Clinical Rehabilitation through ACU and she has extensive experience in neurological rehabilitation for conditions such as MS, stroke, TBI, SCI, prolonged disorders of consciousness and FND. She also treats people with vestibular conditions. Emma also currently works as the senior physiotherapist at the MSNI Clinic at Alfred Health.

Emma has extensive experience supporting clients in managing:

• Spasticity
• Neuromuscular fatigue and heat sensitivity
• Dizziness and vertigo
• Pressure care
• Gait and movement disorders, including returning to running and sports
• Pain
• Complex posture and seating
• Falls

Emma supports clients to explore:

• Aquatic therapy and gym
• Sports and recreation
• Employment or volunteering opportunities
• Specialised equipment prescription such as wheelchairs, standing frames, mobility aids, hoists, transfer aids

Outside of work Emma loves getting back to nature, going for hikes, to the beach or going skiing in winter.

This year Emma will celebrate 6 years with IRS.
